Why you shouldn't be using free email services such as Gmail, Hotmail or Outlook

It is suprising that many Parishes, Priests and Organisations are still use emails ending with gmail.com

Or even...

  • outlook.com
  • eircom.net
  • hotmail.com
  • yahoo.ie

So let's explore why...

Stop using free email!Stop using free email!

So-called 'free' email providers have the following issues:

  • Unreliable - over-subscribed servers
  • No recourse - Google recently lost thousands of people's Gmail emails
  • Privacy - Free providers scan your emails so they can send you targeted advertising
  • Trust - Many scammers use these free email services to pose as trusted organisation or businesses - consequently your emails may not be trusted
  • Security - Hackers find it really easy to target free accounts - as mail settings are public all they need to crack is your password
  • No Support - Have you ever tried getting help when your Gmail or Hotmail has a problem?  Support is DIY, searching forums and finding answers from other non-professionals!

So what is the solution?

What is a Domain Name?

First of all let's clarify what a domain name is.

Websites and Email addresses all use a Domain Name

The domain name is the bit after the www. or https:// for a website address or after the @ symbol in an email.

So if you owned the domain faithful.ie you could use it as follows:

To use this domain for a Website Address it would be: www.faithful.ie or https://faithful.ie

To use the domain for Email Addresses it could be:

  • info@faithful.ie
  • sales@faithful.ie
  • frpatrick.bloggs@faithful.ie

Email addresses for Parishes and Families of Parishes

Most Parishes have a website and there are a growing number of websites for Familes of Parishes.

They will typically use a domain name e.g. barryroe.ie or onfaith.ie

The email address should use the same domain e.g. parish@barryroe.ie or office@onefaith.ie

So it should be no surprise that my email address ends with @faithful.ie - as the website is faithful.ie

Email addresses for Priests

Priests have a unique challenge with email addresses as every few years they regularly move to different parishes.

So an email address like FrPatrickBloggs@clonakiltyparish.com is not appropriate should the priest move to the parish of Skibbereen

There are two suggested solutions for priests:

1. Use a generic alias

An alias is the part of the email address before the @ symbol  e.g. FrPatrickBloggs@clonakiltyparish.com

Instead of using the personal name of a priest consider using a generic alias e.g.

priest@clonakiltyparish.com or pp@clonakiltyparish.com

With this set up when the priest moves parish the new incoming priest could inherit that account with all the history of messages.

And the outgoing priest could take on the generic address at the next parish e.g. priest@skibbereen.com

2. Use a generic domain

The other solution enables the priest to have a permanent email address that follows him whatever parish he may minister to.

Faithful.ie has registered the domain clergy.ie and offers an email service specifically for priests.

So priests can have an address using their unique personal name as the alias e.g. FrPatrickBloggs@clergy.ie
